India has always been an area of rulers and their kingdoms that they acquire by winning over other rulers. The main feature of these kingdoms is the mammoth and strong Indian forts that saved the people from the invaders and wild animals of the forest areas. The common people or the ‘Praja’ used to reside within the walls of the forts with all their lives dependent on the daily markets and activities that took place from day to day.

These forts had various features like the palaces for kings, queens and the royal family, the training places for the armies, the stables for horses, the jails or prisons, step-wells markets, and various other facilities. Another beauty that is witnessed within these forts till date is the magnificent artwork on stones and walls by the artists of that era. These artworks and designs were made so skillfully that they are sustaining their glory till date and are admired by the people of the whole world.

This culture of safeguarding the territory by constructing forts started from medieval India, the time when the Mughals ruled in India. Major forts of India like the Red Fort of Delhi and the Agra Fort are the works of Mughal rulers. Other dynasties that contributed to this were the Rajput and the Maratha dynasties. In India, there are more than 1000 forts present till date and many of them are yet to be discovered.   • The fort with the thickest walls is the Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The thickness of the walls is about 69 feet in some parts.
