Shree Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple in Gujarat

The Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple holds the distinction of being the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated on the western coast of Gujarat, it stands as one of the oldest and most revered temples in the country. Referenced in ancient texts such as the Shreemad Bhagavat Gita, Skandpuran, Shivpuran, and Rig-Veda, the temple’s significance as a sacred pilgrimage site is deeply ingrained in Hindu tradition.

Located at the ancient Triveni Sangam, the temple marks the confluence of three holy rivers: Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati. Despite enduring numerous trials over the centuries, the temple has earned the title of an eternal shrine, steadfastly preserving its sanctity and allure. Throughout history, it has faced destruction on multiple occasions, having been plundered and razed to the ground by invaders including Mahmud Ghazni, Alauddin Khilji, and Aurangzeb.

The revival and reconstruction of the present-day temple in 1951 can be attributed to the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a towering figure in Indian history. Today, the temple stands as a testament to its enduring spirit and serves as a significant monument honoring the legacy of the original Somnath Temple. Drawing millions of devotees from far and wide, it continues to inspire reverence and devotion throughout the year.

Legend of Somnath Jyortilinga

The term ‘Soma’ translates to the Moon God, while ‘Somnath’ signifies the protector of the Moon God. According to legend, Soma, the Moon God, was married to 27 daughters of King Daksha, but he showed partiality towards only one of them. This caused resentment among the other daughters, who complained to their father. Angered by Soma’s behavior, Daksha cursed him, decreeing that he would gradually diminish in brightness. Seeking redemption, Soma erected a Shivlinga at the Prabhas teerth and fervently prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness and aid. Lord Shiva, in response, lifted the curse partially, leading to the cyclical waxing and waning of the moon. Consequently, the temple became dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity, symbolizing the divine intervention that mitigated Soma’s plight.

Architecture of Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple

Reconstructed in the Chalukya architectural style, the Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the renowned Sompura Salats, esteemed as the oldest and most skilled temple architects. An arrow pillar within the temple premises indicates its unique geographical location as the northernmost point of land along a specific longitude, extending from the North to the South Pole.

The temple’s architecture features a balconied corridor adorned with recesses that house a somewhat damaged depiction of Nataraja, the dancing form of Lord Shiva. Atop the temple tower, the flag proudly displays symbols representing Nandi, the sacred bull, and the Trishul, Lord Shiva’s trident.

Despite its Brahmanical dedication, the influence of Jain artistry is evident in the intricate carvings and overall design of the temple, highlighting the rich cultural and religious heritage embedded within its walls.
